Monsters Like Us

Earth 31

?: In Saturn City, the streets are busy day and night. They say it's one of the most dangerous places to live in all on Eagleland, but it's really only at night you have to worry. That's when people go missing. That's when they come out to lurk....to hunt....to play.

A figure lurked in the darkness, in a trench coat and hat, keeping his face concealed with a scarf. He didn't stand out in the crowd too much, but someone did. A cocky looking pale young man. His ginger hair made his pale features stand out even more. He was seen talking to a young woman who seemed to enjoy his attention, but his advances began to make her uncomfortable. The heavily dressed man followed them down the neon lit street into an alley way, where she insisted on being left alone. She pushed him away, but he didn't budge. Fighting him off seemed to entice him further. This was reason enough to stop this, but what happened next, made it far more dangerous. The man's eye began to glow, as he suddenly bared his fangs. Pushing the girl against a brick wall, the man began to resemble a demon, as he ripped her shirt off, and forced her head to the side. He was about to take a bite, when the heavily dressed man interceded.

?: HEY! STOP THAT RIGHT NOW!

The attacker turned his head, puzzled at the man who interrupted. He laughed as he quickly threw her down and pushed him to the ground, in a flash of superhuman speed. The heavily dressed man's hat fell to the ground, as the monstrous figure lifted the man by the neck, and held him up, throwing off his sunglasses.

?: *cough cough* Y-you're a vampire!

Vampire: Vampire? How the hell do you know anything about that?

?: Look into my eyes, and find out.

Vampire: Huh? Your eyes? What the hell? You're-

Suddenly, the heavily dressed man fell back onto the cold wet pavement, as the vampire was assaulted from behind, by what could only be described as a large wolf man. The hair covered rage monster, tussled with the vampire assailant, as they smashed each other into the brick walls of the alley, before the beast finally used his claws to rips through the vampire, tearing out his heart and crushing it in his hands. The vampire fell to the ground dead, once again.

?: S-s-stay back!

The beast turned to the heavily dressed man, and approached. He loomed over him, ready to strike.

?: Please. C-c-c-calm down. I'm not a threat. Yes, we've met before, and I'm sorry to get in the way of your work, but I was trying to help! M-m-my name is Tack....Dr. Tack Griffin, and I too hunt the creatures of the night. I mean....yes...that's supposed to mean you too BUT....but....I can see that you're not out here for malice....at least not tonight. Who are you?

The wolf man backed away as he shrunk in size, the hair receding back into his body. He began to take a more human appearance, before finally returning to one. His hair and stubble gave him a grizzled yet youthful appearance, while his eyes revealed his age. His tattered pants were all that he still had on, and from them, he produced a badge from his back pocket. A police badge, belonging to a Trevor Talbot.

Trevor Talbot: Detective Trevor Talbot, SCPD. You seem to know a lot about me Mr. Griffin, but I know next to nothing about you, except that you have a problem with getting into my business. You have any idea what that just was?

Tack Griffin: Y-yes. It was a vampire. A creature of the night, much like yourself, though one driven by the hunger for blood almost exclusively.

Trevor Talbot: You and I need to have a discussion about this. Man to man.

Tack Griffin: I'd prefer that to man to beast. Though, I don't know if we're going to be able to see eye to eye on this.

Trevor Talbot: And why is that?

Tack Griffin: You're not the only one, with a secret to hide.

Tack Griffin began to remove the scarf around his face, and his coat, and shirt, to reveal.....nothing....he was completely invisible.

Trevor Talbot: I guess you weren't kidding. Doctor was it?

Tack Griffin: Yes. I would still very much like to have that talk though.

Trevor Talbot: Of course. Let's just make sure the girl is alri-

The two turned to see another figure latched onto the girl in the alley. The seductive, yet imposing looking woman had her fangs buried in the young woman's neck, but she only for a moment, before she backed off, seemingly fighting the urge to continue. She smiled as she wiped the blood from her mouth.

?: Thanks for the help fellas. I had my eye on her too. I could smell the blood from a mile away. Don't worry, she's not going to turn. You have to take a lot more than that to make them turn. I just....needed a snack. The name's Talya by the way. Talya Zaleska. Mind if I join you for that....."chat"?

Trevor Talbot: ....

Tack Griffin: .....

Re: Monsters Like Us

Threed - 1987

An alarm struck 9:00am, as Detective Trevor Talbot burst awake.

Trevor Talbot: Oh fuck me.

The unkempt Detective took a swig of the beer on the nightstand, before quickly getting dressed. The topless woman in bed barely moved, as Talbot took his badge from her g-string. He wasn't even sure of her name, but he was glad to see his car was still parked outside of her house. He rushed to get in, and take off, though he stopped suddenly, to open the door to vomit. One final gift for his one night stand, as he drove off into the harsh bright morning.

Radio Announcer: *on the radio* Welcome to the Threed Morning Radio show, and we're not off to a good start this morning Threedizens, as another person was reported missing last night. You really hate to hear it, but that brings the number up to 21 this year alone. Threed is quickly turning into the missing persons capitol of Eagleland. Of course those are low ball numbers for any given city in Euroland, but we're held to a higher standard of course. Let's hope the Threed PD can get on the ball and figure this out, before anyone else goes missing, namely yours truly.

Talbot stopped at a light and looked around. The people of Threed seemed on edge, and at the same time drained of all enthusiasm.

Trevor Talbot: Shuffling around like a bunch of zombies out there.

Trevor popped a breath mint as he crept into the station, and slipped into his office, thinking he had gotten away with it, that is until his Chief burst in one minute later.

Trevor Talbot: Chief Garou, I was just-

Chief Garou: Save it Talbot, I smelled you the second you came in.

Trevor Talbot: I don't understand why I was so late today. I mean, I set an alarm, of course it wasn't mine, it wasn't set for the right time, it wasn't my house, and-

Chief Garou: I got it. Same ol' shit from you. I've about had it!

Talbot had started his career as a promising Detective, but the stress and vices had worn him down. Still, even through the fog of alcohol, he couldn't help but notice the cuts on his boss's face this morning.

Trevor Talbot: You cut yourself shaving or something boss?

Chief Garou: What? Uh yeah, you know how it is, or maybe you don't, because you don't look like you've seen a razor in days.

Trevor Talbot: I'm looking over this case file Chief, and this one looked a little close to home for you. Same neighborhood. No wonder you're stressed. You got people no doubt wanting your head for letting this one slip.

Chief Garou: Don't try and change the subject asshole. This night stalker might attack again tonight, and I need all my best on this case, not boozing it up and shacking up with God knows who!

Trevor Talbot: You think I'm not working this case or something? I get the feeling that you're sandbagging me though. I mean, I gave you a profile of his type, and you didn't listen. Then, I look at these patrols you've got out and about all hours of the day and night. They always seem to miss the mark. Funny how that works right.

Chief Garou: You incinuating something boy?

Trevor Talbot: I'm just pointing out some interesting facts.

Chief Garou: I have a couple facts for you too. Breath mints don't mask that cheap ass beer like you think they do, and you're not exactly the foremost authority around here. I know you thing you are, but you're not.

Trevor Talbot: I could speak to someone else about my findings if you'd like, but-

Chief Garou: No. No, that won't be needed. You and I can talk about this tonight. You'll join me on a patrol right? Oh wait, I forgot, I'm the boss. It's an order.

Trevor Talbot: I'm not a patrolman.

Chief Garou: And neither am I smartass! Our patrol will start at 10pm! Be ready! Don't make me come looking for you!

Trevor Talbot: ....

That night, Talbot saw in the passenger seat of the cop car, driven by Chief Garou. They drove into the dark foggy night in silence for what felt like an hour before the Chief finally spoke up.

Chief Garou: That was some full moon last night huh?

Trevor Talbot: Uh yeah, it was something I guess.

Chief Garou: I bet you didn't even notice it. You were too deep into your liquid diet. I've got my own kind of diet these days. Helps keep me sharp. I'm at the top of my game actually. Of course, I tend to lose control every now and then, and I indulge. I was doing that last night.

Trevor Talbot: The hell are you talking about Chief?

Chief Garou: You know anything about werewolves Talbot?

Trevor Talbot: Were what now?

Chief Garou: Heh. Of course don't. You probably saw a few movies though. They don't have all the answers though. Like for example, yes, a full moon will transform someone into a werewolf, if they are cursed with it, but that doesn't mean they can't turn every other night. It's just a full moon is the one night a month were a werewolf loses control.

A puzzled Trevor slowly reached for his gun, as the Chief kept talking.

Trevor Talbot: Where are we heading Chie-

Chief Garou: DON'T INTERRUPT ME! So as I was saying, once a month a werewolf has no choice, but to give in to their vices. They have to indulge in a liquid diet of their own. It's impulse. It can't be helped. I think as long as the person keeps themselves in check every other day, then a little slip here and there is alright. What do you think?

Trevor Talbot: I think I'm waiting for the punchline?

Chief Garou: No joke, except for you Talbot. You could've been a great Detective, but you let the job destroy you.

Trevor Talbot: Probably, but we're talking about you right now Chief. Are you all right?

Chief Garou: Never better. Say Talbot, are you absolutely sure you have to present that evidence? You can't just look the other way?

Trevor Talbot: I know it seems easy for me to do, but it really isn't. No, I don't think I'm going to Chief.

Chief Garou: A real damn shame.

The car suddenly stopped, and Trevor found himself at the cemetary. He looked towards the Chief, but was stunned to see a horribly disfigured wolf creature staring at him instead, with snarling fangs, and ferocious eyes.

Trevor Talbot: CHIEF?!

Chief Garou: Those others weren't my fault. This one, I do by choice.

The Chief bit Trevor's right arm as he pulled his gun.

Saturn Cafe - 2021

Trevor Talbot stirred his coffee, before pulling out a flash, and pouring a little something extra into it.

Tack Griffin: So then what happened?

Trevor Talbot: What do you think? I'm here, and he's not.

Talya Zaleska: Interesting, that you'd be so inept at your job that your own Chief would want to devour you.

Trevor Talbot: It wasn't because I was inept...at least not this time. I was on the right track. I was going to pin him to the disappearances. Of course, I had no idea that he was actually a werewolf, and that he was eating them.

Tack Griffin: Amazing. That was in '87 right? You should be in your 70s by now. Incredible. But wait, how did you get away?

Trevor Talbot: Oh, I have a lot more of my story Doctor, but I want to know how you know about me in the first place. I want to know that, and why the hell you're invisible.

Talya Zaleska: That makes two of us.

Trevor Talbot: I'm still not sure why I don't arrest you for attacking that girl.

Talya Zaleska: I didn't attack her Detective. I took advantage of a situation. You should really be more friendly to me. Vampires and Werewolves don't often get along so well. Think of the example we're setting here.

Trevor Talbot: Yeah, I'm sure you're all heart, when you're not tearing them out.

Talya Zaleska: Speak for yourself.

Trevor Talbot: I'll tell you both more if you want to hear it, but I'm going to need to hear from BOTH of you first. Doctor? I'm all ears.

Tack Griffin: Yes, of course. It started....with a theory.
